Gordon Drake Designer

.

When Gordon Drake died while skiing at age 35 in 1952, he accidentally ended an architectural career that was as meteoric as it was brief. In seven years, he completed a scant dozen or so buildings, but his first two won national recognition in architectural competitions, and his reputation was such that his buildings, sketches, and writings influenced the postwar built environment, and inspired a book, “The California Houses of Gordon Drake,” published in 1956.

Bird of prey By Vincent Michel

.

Vincent Michel send me these amazing pictures of birds of prey.

Birds of prey are birds that hunt for food primarily on the wing, using their keen senses, especially vision. They are defined as birds that primarily hunt vertebrates, including other birds. Their talons and beaks tend to be relatively large, powerful and adapted for tearing and/or piercing flesh. In most cases, the females are considerably larger than the males. The term "raptor" is derived from the Latin word "rapere" (meaning to seize or take by force) and may refer informally to all birds of prey, or specifically to the diurnal group. Because of their overall large size and predatory lifestyle, they face distinct conservation concerns.

The Pony Express Riders

.

The Pony Express made its first run on April 3, 1860 and immediately captured the imagination of the nation. It had been established to provide a speedy method of delivering mail over a two thousand mile route that stretched between St. Joseph Missouri and Sacramento, California. The distance was divided into a series of relays 75 to 100 miles in length over which a lone rider would race, changing his horse every 10 to 15 miles before handing his cargo off to the next rider. He would then wait for a rider from the opposite direction to arrive, take his mail, and return to his starting point.

Public Enemy #1 - John Dillinger

.

The Dillinger's 1930 FORD "MODEL A"

On the night of July 22, 1934, a team of FBI agents nervously waited in the sticky heat outside the Biograph Theater in Chicago. They waited for John Dillinger, Public Enemy #1. Shortly, the movie ended and the theater released its audience onto the street, John Dillinger among them. Using a prearranged signal, Melvin Purvis, head of the FBI team, lit his cigar and three agents opened fire. The hail of bullets wounded two bystanders and killed Dillinger. His death ended a crime spree that had lasted only 11 months. In that short time his activities captivated the imagination of the country creating a legend that persists today.

Supermarine S-May 1927

The Supermarine were the ancestors of the legendary Spitfire Vickers who covered themselves with glory during the Second World War. In 1927, the "Supermarine Aviation Works" sent three Supermarine on the Adriatic to compete for the Prix Schneider at the time England and Italy were only able to compete. Second Lieutenant Webster was victorious, with a speed of 450.64 km / h. Captain Guazetti arrived in third place with his Macchi.

Macchi M-39 1926

Great Britain took no part in the Schneider Award in 1926. Italy and the United States thus found themselves competing for them, and it was Major Mario di Bernardi brought the cup in Italy, his aircraft Macchi M-39 has established a new record of 396.61 km / h.
