2013 Moto Electra World Record on a Norton Electric Motorcycle

Just a quick reminder for those who, like me, missed this disastrous event. 

In 2013, Moto Electra Racing Electric motorcycle completed world record coast to coast trip using electricity run battery Florida to California cross country. In just 3 days and on June 6th the team accomplished this world record-breaking feat! Battling temperatures over 100 degrees, punishing rain and bike repairs, the racing team hit their goal while showing the world the potential of electric motors. As the sun rose bright and early in Jacksonville, Florida, the Moto Electra racing team was saddled up and ready to go. But by the afternoon, rain had forced the team to stop. They didn’t let that get them down, and within the hour, the team was back up and moving, despite the downpour.

 

Over the next few days, the team would stop now and then for a little bit of rest, to recharge the bike’s battery, to address issues with the charging equipment, and to replace the headlight and change out the throttle. During the Texas leg of the journey, temperatures creeped above 100 degrees, and the team took turns swapping riders to make it through the grueling leg. As they neared the Texas border, rider Thad Wolff exclaimed, “I look forward to getting the hell outta Texas!”

 

After battling Los Angeles traffic, the team pulled into the finish line on the Santa Monica pier on the evening of 6th as the sun set over the Pacific. The team achieved the first coast-to-coast run on an electric bike in under 3.5 days. According to the team, the bike and the batteries performed as well as they’d hoped, showing the world just what green technology can accomplish.

1969 Norton Commando 750

 

This Norton Commando 750 is an iconic 1960s motorcycle, which has been rebuilt as a period-correct café racer. Power comes from the 750cc twin-cylinder pushrod engine, coupled to a four-speed gearbox. This Commando was sold new in Sweden and subsequently imported to Finland in 2007, where it has been thoroughly refurbished and rebuilt as a café racer, including an overhaul of the engine and gearbox.

Ex-Barry Sheene, ex-John Cronshaw, Manx Norton 500cc Racing Motorcycle

From the late 1990s, Barry Sheene became involved in historic motorcycle racing, competing at events such as the Philip Island Classic in Australia and at Donington Park, Scarborough and Goodwood in the UK. In 2002 he was invited back to what would be his final competitive outing on a motorcycle, the Goodwood Revival Meeting, held in September. Barry's mount that day was this machine, one of celebrated engineer/ tuner Fred Walmsley's modern Manx Norton re-creations.

The pair's relationship had begun back in 1999 when Barry had asked Fred to provide a machine for F1 World Champion Damon Hill to ride at the second running of the Goodwood Revival. Barry was riding someone else's Manx in practice, only for the bike to suffer a serious mechanical failure which Fred fixed; from then onwards Barry only ever rode machines supplied by Fred.

Norton John Player Specials 1974 Space Frame

The last of the John Player Specials was the 1974 Space Frame, which replaced the Monocoque of the year before. The multi-tube trellis frame still surrounded the motor but was a lighter, more mechanic-friendly design. The engine used was the short-stroke Commando unit fitted with a dry clutch and modified primary drive that featured an extra outrigger bearing. Four race bikes were constructed (also a prototype that had a differently designed frame). This bike was raced by both Peter Williams and Dave Croxford. Williams used it to win his last race at Spa before it was past on the Benilux Norton agent, Podevyn, to compete in local F750 events. It has been restored by P & M Motorcycles in Middlesex. 78hp at 7,800rpm. Weight 150kg. Top speed 265kph. Photographed by Phil Aynsley in southern England. 2018.

Cooper Streamliner
