Nirmal Purja is a Nepal-born naturalised British mountaineer and a holder of multiple mountaineering world records. Prior to taking on a career in mountaineering, he served in the British Army with the Brigade of Gurkhas followed by the Special Boat Service (SBS), the special forces unit of the Royal Navy. Purja is notable for having climbed all 14 eight-thousanders (peaks above 8,000 metres or 26,000 feet) in a record time of six months and six days with the aid of bottled oxygen. He was also the first to reach the summits of Mount Everest, Lhotse and Makalu within 48 hours. In 2021, Purja, along with a team of nine other Nepalese mountaineers, completed the first winter ascent of K2. It is surely one of the greatest feats of modern mountaineering. Climbing all the peaks over 8,000m represents a sprawling and often nebulous goal, even for the creme de la creme of climbers in the world. El Cordobés

Manuel Benítez Pérez was born 4 May 1936, more commonly known as El Cordobés (The Cordovan), is a Spanish bullfighter, matador, and actor active in the 1960s who brought an unorthodox acrobatic and theatrical style to the Corrida. I remember when I was a kid, watching him on TV, fascinated by his grinta. One of the original techniques practiced by El Cordobés was first shown at Anjucar. He waved his banderilla (Columpio) away, broke his banderillas down to 'pencil length', and standing with his back to the bull as it charged, moved his right leg out moments before the bull was upon him, causing the bull to swerve and allowing El Cordobés a moment to slam in the banderillas from just behind the left horn. This maneuver was repeated in bullfights across Spain, sometimes with even more dangerous variations, such as standing with his back to the barerra and driving in the banderillas after the horns passed either side of him. On May 20, 1964, when he made his first appearance at Las Ventas in Madrid, the bullfight ended with the near-fatal goring of El Cordobés on the horns of the bull Impulsivo. Twenty-two days later El Cordobés fought again.

By the time of his first retirement, in 1971, El Cordobés had become the highest-paid matador in history. After eight years of retirement, he returned to bullfighting in 1979. Following an incident in 1983, when a bull that he was about to fight killed an espontáneo (bystander who jumps into bullring), El Cordobés was criticized by the press for allowing it to happen.

El Cordobés continued to make occasional appearances as a matador until 2000, when he retired permanently. He also acted in several motion pictures. El Cordobés lives in near seclusion near Córdoba. In 2016 he appeared with the woman bullfighter Conchi Ríos and Antonio Puerta in Cehegín in Murcia.

Mountain Boots

For as long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated by Himalayan expeditions. Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal at the Annapurna, Nicolas Jaeger at the Everest, René Desmaison at the Jannu, Yannick Seigneur at the Nanga Parbat or Lionel Terray at the Makalu, all these names made me dream and still continue today. The love I have for mountain boots surely comes from those television shows or those books that I have read for years and even if today technology makes lighter and more technical shoes possible, the good old leather shoes remain my favorites.

At age 13, Kanesha Jackson's daughter, Kortnee Solomon,  is already a pro on the rodeo trail, having won numerous championships in recent years. As a fourth-generation Texas cowgirl, riding and roping is in Kortnee’s blood – she officially debuted at just 5 years old at the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo, the oldest Black-owned rodeo circuit in the United States. The daughter of 11-time invitational champion Kanesha Jackson and Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association tie-down roper Cory Solomon, Kortnee loves to compete, never backing down from the opportunity to test her mettle against women twice her age and male athletes.
