Sinje Oki Gottwald Cake Motorcycle

A few days ago I stumble upon an article about Sinje Oki Gottwald, the first person to cross Africa unassisted on an electric motorcycle  and what I saw is unbelievable. For this trip she rode the Kalk OR Race from CAKE Motorcycle, the next level in the category of lightweight electric motorcycles, premium Öhlins suspension, lightweight, 280Nm of electric instant torque.

CAKE was founded in 2016 by the acknowledged entrepreneur in strategy, design and branding, Stefan Ytterborn.

 In Cape Town

Leaving Barcelona in October 2022, Sinje Oki Gottwald rode south along the West Coast of Africa on this electric motorcycle in an attempt to set up a new world record. On february 15th 2023 she finally arrived in Cape Town after crossing the African continent from north to south on her electric motorcycle.

Alpine A310 Paris-Dakar 1981

Forty one years ago, two men set out to do the Paris-Dakar with an Alpine A310! Better known for its victories in rallies, the Dieppe brand has never been officially entered in this legendary event. But that was without counting on the tenacity of driver Thierry Reverchon, and his co-driver Georges Vaills, who was looking for a safe car to take part in this 1981 edition. The 1981 Paris-Dakar Rally was the 3rd running of the Dakar Rally event. The car class was won by René Metge and Bernard Giroux with a Range Rover V8. The motorcycle class was won by Hubert Auriol on a BMW GS 800.

Paris-Dakar 1979

 Cyril Neveu 1979 winner

Thierry Sabine

Grégoire Verhaeghe, the youngest entry finishes 65th

BMW is also present on this first 1979 Dakar, via its French subsidiary BMW France, with the relatively unnoticed commitment of an unknown motorcyclist, Philippe Jambert, on the occasion of the recent release of his R65.

Thierry Sabine's bet came true on December 26, 1978: 182 vehicles were present on the Place du Trocadéro for a 10,000 km journey into the unknown, towards Dakar. The meeting between two worlds, sought by the founder of the event, occurs on the African continent. Among the 74 pioneers who reached the Senegalese capital, Cyril Neveu, riding a Yamaha 500 XT, opened the list of winners of the biggest rally in the world.

Harmonia Rosales

.

Harmonia Rosales believes in creating artwork with meaning--meaning with impact, moving people to see the world differently and to be guided by that new vision. Based in Chicago, her inspiration arises from living life as a woman of color. Her art is born out of a combination of her love for history, thirst for endless new knowledge, and dedication to social action. In refining her work, she has been able to shape a unique perspective built on the foundation of an appreciation of traditional expression and form, with structure and story that creates a bold new contemporary counter narrative-on the elements of the story, as well as the elements of the process of storytelling. Art is her weapon in the ongoing battle against indifference and inaction. It forms the basis of resistance.

The Horsemen of Semonkong by Thom Pierce

.

All pictures by Thom Pierce

In the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, the region of Semonkong sits at 2,275 metres above sea level in the Drakensberg mountains. The area is made up of many small villages, most of which are inaccessible by car and nestled high up in the mountains without electricity and mains water. Travel time from these villages to Semonkong, the nearest town, can be up to 4 hours and so the journey is often taken by horse.
