His great-grandfather was a lawman around in Globe, Arizona. He was very tall and needed a very tall horse, and a special saddle was built for him. At first He thought that fluffy "thing" at the bottom of the photo was some sort of animal, but he's pretty sure it's dust flying from the horse's hoof.
