Dutchman Photos

.

Scotty hails from Huntington Beach. Toghether with his father, brother and a friend, they run the Cycle Zombies. They’re not a club or anything like that, just a bunch of motorcycle-, surf-, skate-, and music enthusiasts. Their father grew up in the sixties and spent his time hanging out with old bikers and surfing on his longboard. His sons are no different. They are sponsored by Hurley and live the dream. Like I said, surfing, skateboarding, music, and motorcycles.. That’s what it’s all about for these kids. They rip it up on daily basis.

Max Schaaf introduced me to his friend Sara. I didn’t know what to expect when we went to Redwood City to do the photoshoot of her Triumph, but he told me she’s the female version of Jason Jessee. He was right. This day went by like a hurricane. I’ve never seen a girl ride her bike as hard as Sara does. It was great to see her fly down the mountain roads near San Francisco.

Jason is a very special guy. I was introduced to him by Max Schaaf, and got to meet him a couple times. Jason is a true original and if you don’t know the story behind this guy, you probably don’t understand what he’s all about. I can tell you that he owns the most insane chopper stuff.

Maurice van den Tillaard, residing in the Netherlands, Europe. Interested in all kinds of motorized stuff and its associated subculture. DutchmanPhotos came from the Flyin’ Dutchman nickname. Friends in L.A. gave me that name because I came out there so often a couple years ago. Nowadays I go over once, sometimes twice a year. It’s a beautiful area to take photos, and also, for many of my interests, California is the place to be.
I’ve been shooting photos since I was a young kid, but since 2004 I’ve been trying to step it up bit by bit. In the photography world you can learn something every day.
Since a couple years I’ve been caught up in sports photography too. I grew up riding BMX and downhill mountainbiking and those have always been my favourite sports, so I love to shoot those. Motocross is another sport which is great to cover.
Since a while I started to shoot with an old analog Canon AT1 again. It’s nice to shoot portraits or take street shots with an old camera like that. It’s a lot of work to scan the photos, but I loved it so much that I bought a Mamiya RZ67. It hasn’t seen too much use yet, but I expect to be working with it a lot in the future.
Thanks for introducing me on your blog Frank!
Cheers,
