Abandoned Gas Stations

.

By Guest contributor Stephen Mitchell

Traveling with my parents when I was very young on the iconic Route 66, I recall seeing landmarks such as theses along the way. Some were still functioning and some were closed or abandoned. None were valued for the time that they represented; the country was enjoying a growth spurt and new replaced old whenever and wherever possible. That any of these have remained is a miracle and they are a compelling legacy of a time that will never return for any of us. - Stephen

It is a shame that we don't value old things here in the USA. There are still a few old stations on Route 66, but they are falling down now. I snapped some pics last month: http://occhiolungo.wordpress.com/2010/10/05/somewhere-on-route-66/
