By Tim Challis : My grandfather, Ernest Harwood (1910-1991), was Field Marshal Montgomery's personal clerk during much of the second world war (amongst other things, he typed out the orders for the battle of El Alamein). His personal photo album gives a valuable look inside the workings of the Desert Rats, and contains images of many significant players. Some pictures are War Office, given to my grandfather by Montgomery, and others are his own snaps.
Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, KG, GCB, DSO, PC, often referred to as "Monty", was a British Army officer. He saw action in World War I, and during World War II he successfully commanded Allied forces at the Battle of El Alamein.
