The New York City's period of rapid growth from 1870 to 1930 included significant development of residential neighborhoods, populated by newly constructed brownstones, row houses, and apartment buildings, which express a very different character than the skyscrapers that densely pack the city's commercial districts. By 1870, stone and brick had become firmly established as the building materials of choice, as the construction of wood-frame houses had been greatly limited in the aftermath of the Great Fire of 1835.
