According to Howard Chapelle in his book The History of American Sailing Ships, Grayling was a centerboard schooner designed by Phil Ellsworth.
Grayling was built in 1883 by C&R Poillon in Brooklyn, NY. Its owver was Latham Fish, Commodore of the Atlantic Yacht Club. It measured 91 x 23 feet. They note it had a "long racing career."
