Tag Heuer in Monaco by Nicholas Biebuyck

.

Our Guest Contributor Nicholas Biebuyck will be in Monaco from the 9th to 12th May for the historic grand prix as Bonhams has a sale there and he will be taking 50 Heuers over to auction. Among the watches he is taking for the auction is an early Jo Siffert Autavia, which he wrote a little footnote for the sale and have attached a couple of the high resolution images we took for the catalogue and website. It features the same movement as the Steve McQueen Monaco 1133 B the Heuer Calibre 11, and is really beautiful with the combination of blue and white on the dial and hands.
In 1968 Jo 'Seppi' Siffert won both 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring in a Porsche 907 firmly securing his place in motor racing history. His career was brought to a sudden and tragic end in 1971 when his BRM crashed at Brands Hatch, with Siffert unable to free himself, and caught fire.
As one of the most collected models from the extensive Autavia range, the distinctive 1163 T features a calibre 11 movement, white dial, blue chronograph hand, tachymeter bezel, black subsidiary dials and blue accents to the dial. This example is an early, post Chronomatic version, apparent due to the case design, subdial 3-6-9-12 divisions on the hour subdial, the style of the applied hour markers and the untidy engraving of Heuer to the movement. - Nicholas
