Beatrice "Tilly" Shilling was a British aeronautical engineer and motorcycle racer born in 1909. She devised the solution for a major problem with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine that was fitted to the RAF fighter planes including the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane.
Above she is photographed aboard a Norton at Brooklands in 1935 where she was awarded a Gold Star for lapping at more than 100mph.
