The stained glass windows of the Residence Guetharia

By the sea, the Residence Guetharia near Biarritz, is a beautiful Art Deco style building built in 1926 by the Basque architect Joseph Hiriart in Guéthary. In the past, the building housed a hotel that was converted into a condo. Joseph Hiriart, born March 5, 1888 in Bayonne and died November 17, 1946 in Paris, was a French architect. He began his training as an architect in 1910 at the National School of Fine Arts. After his mobilization during the First World War, he graduated on June 7, 1922. He carried out numerous projects in Paris, Tunisia and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, notably the Sea Museum of Biarritz in Art Deco style.

Severely damaged, the stained glass windows by Jacques Grüber, located under the entrance footbridge, have benefited from an overall restoration, thus allowing their geometric patterns to be highlighted. This restoration is part of the partnership agreement established between the City of Guéthary and the Heritage Foundation.

Originally, it was a hotel with a breathtaking view, overlooking Hondarribia on one side and Biarritz on the other. And many were the celebrities of the time to stay, from Maurice Chevalier to Charlie Chaplin.

After the Second World War, the hotel was dismantled and sold as a residence in 37 lots, which became as many ultra-rated apartments, given its impregnable location and the artistic quality of its construction.

A master glassmaker famous for his stained glass windows in the Villa Majorelle in Nancy and the glass roof in the Galeries Lafayette in Paris. Jacques Gruber, born February 25, 1870 in Sundhouse (Bas-Rhin) and died December 15, 1936 in Paris, was a French master glassmaker, cabinetmaker and decorator.

A perfect example of Art Deco, the building was completely renovated in 2017
