SNA Saphir Vs USS Theodore Roosevelt

USS Theodore Roosevelt

The Saphir (S602) is a French Navy nuclear attack submarine (SNA), in service from 1984 to 2019. It is the second of the six 1st generation Rubis-class SNAs, built by DCN between 1976 and 1990. During joint training with the US Navy off Florida in early 2015, Saphir virtually sank the US aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and its destroyer escort (Ticonderoga, Arleigh Burke and a sub-marine). Los Angeles-class nuclear attack marine). The Saphir slipped discreetly into the heart of the screen formed by the American frigates protecting the aircraft carrier, while avoiding the counter-detection of the ubiquitous air assets. On the morning of the last day, the order to fire was finally given, allowing the Saphir to fictitiously sink the Theodore Roosevelt and most of her escort. The information, first published on the official website of the French Ministry of Defense, was quickly deleted.

The Saphir was retired from active service at the end of July 20191. In 2021, its front part was cut out to replace the counterpart section of the Perle, burnt down in 2020. Conversely, the hull of the Saphir was reconstituted by welding the damaged bow of the Pearl, to allow it to be relaunched, and to take it back to the quay in the dismantling area.
