Maserati V8RI (1935–1936) were four racing cars made by Maserati of Modena. Designed by Ernesto Maserati, they had a front-mounted 4788 cc V8 engine, 90 degrees. Roots type supercharger and dual choke Weber carburetor, single camshaft resulted in 320 bhp and a maximum speed of 270 km/h (170 mph). The "RI" denoted Ruote indipendenti, the then innovative independent four-wheel suspension. The cars measurements were wheelbase 2,560 mm (101 in), length 3,865 mm (152.2 in), width 1,490 mm (59 in), height 1,250 mm (49 in). Chassis #4501 debuted at Grand Prix de la Marne 1935, driven by Philippe Étancelin.

I received today this message from Cris.

Hi Frank,
Big fan of your sites. The post you made about the Maserati is great but
those photos are of the Topping-Miller special, not of any of the V8Ris.
Topping entered that car in the Vanderbilt Cup race for Stapp one year and
then a V8Ri for him the next year. The Topping-Miller is a one-of-kind
car...note that it has a solid front axle, unlike the "route indipendenti"
suspensions of the Maserati. Maybe the Vanderbilt Cup site has the photos
labeled poorly?

Attache is a photo of a friend of mine's V8Ri when they pulled it out of
the shed to freshen it up.

Best regards,

Cris
